As part of an overall decentralised stormwater treatment strategy, a series of small raingardens were designed to treat runoff from a local road and car park. Downstream of the gardens is a Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) and the gardens were designed to target pollutants that the GPT is unable to capture. By this clever design, maintenance of the raingardens is reduced and by complements existing infrastructure best value for money is assured. The systems were designed to provide a landscaping function as well as improving the water quality of the downstream creek and blends in with existing amenities on site. By close collaboration with Council’s landscape architect the systems now forms a natural part of nearby North Turramurra Park.
Research undertaken on the raingarden secured a win in the Sustainable Water Challenge NSW, Research Category, in 2008. Design: Jay Jonasson for Ku-ring-gai Council.
