St Ives Leachate Reuse

Ku-ring-gai Council is the custodian of an old decommissioned vegetation landfill in St Ives, NSW. As part of the ongoing management, up to 16,000kL of leachate had to be managed at the site every year at considerable cost to Council. A reuse project was developed that sees the leachate undergo treatment and the water is then used to irrigate nearby St Ives Showground and council’s nursery, saving over 10,000kL of drinking water per year. The project turns a waste product into a valuable resource and won Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Water Conservation Award in 2011.
